Celebrating Thirty Years of Achievement
2022 sees the thirtieth anniversary of the destruction of Kidderminster’s Victorian library – a day of ignominy for many in the town. However the dust of the demolition gangs had hardly settled before steps were afoot to ensure that the town’s heritage would be regarded with greater sensitivity from that day on. The Kidderminster Society (later renamed the Kidderminster Civic Society) was established in March 1993 to ensure that that would be the case.
The Society has just published a short book ‘Dedicated to Usefulness and to Art’ which recalls that dark day three decades ago but also sets down the achievements and the positive developments to which the Civic Society has contributed through that period. These include the creation of the Museum of Carpet, the establishment of Kidderminster Town Council and a host of other initiatives and activities. The Civic Society maintains a continuous watching brief on new development in the town, contributing to the debate on local plans and individual proposals aiming to ensure that these reflect changing needs across the town.
Overall the book provides a timeline of the many changes that the town has experienced over those last thirty years. It takes its title from a poem by Noah Cooke, the 19th century Weaver Poet written for the very first edition of the Kidderminster Shuttle in 1870.
The book will be launched on Civic Day, June 18th. Members of the Society will have a stand outside the Town Hall which will promote the Society and its activities over the last few decades.
Copies of the book are available from Kidderminster Civic Society for £5.00 plus delivery which will be free within Kidderminster.
