A rapacious appetite for the new at the expense of the old was one of the defining characteristics of the 1960s and Kidderminster was far from immune to it. This plaque commemorates a feature of the town that was lost in enthusiasm to create a new shopping ‘experience’ for townspeople and visitors – the Swan Centre.

Left underneath the modern development are the Harveys Wine Vaults which were most likely the undercrofts of the premises of medieval merchants.

The Harveys the Vaults are named after, are in fact the celebrated Harvey family whose sherries and other wines graced - and continue to grace - the tables of wine lovers across the land for very many years. Although widely associated with the city of Bristol, the Harveys in fact had a long and prosperous association with Kidderminster. The Harveys’ presence in Kidderminster extended over almost 150 years beginning around 1829
