An avant-garde rock band visiting Kidderminster from the United States once assumed that ‘Frank Freeman’s Dance Club’ was the name of another progressive group, But no, it was exactly what it said on the tin – a club for dancing run by a man called Frank Freeman (and to give the full picture, also his wife, Wynn). It was a place where young and old could learn dance in its many forms and practice and develop their skills. In its earlier days the music emerging from the club would have been that of Joe Loss and Victor Sylvester.
However as the tastes of some of his younger clientele moved on, Frank was only to eager to accommodate them and it then became a venue which also was a home for ‘mods’ and their music and dance styles,

Another additional focus was on progressive music and bands such as Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac, Yes, and Jimi Hendrix and Tyrannosaurus Rex all performed in Kidderminster as did local, and eventual global, rock star Robert Plant on many occasions. Sessions were overseen by the leading taste former of the progressive genre, DJ John Peel.

And all the while the Dance Club also continued its traditional role in the wider Kidderminster community, and it was while preparing the club for a childrens birthday party that Frank had a heart attack and died in 1991.
