Kidderminster as mapped in 1883
Ordinance Survey
Scale 1:500
Nick Hughes, Chairman of this society, possesses a collection of maps that includes an OS map of Kidderminster surveyed in 1883 and published in 1884. The maps are in sections which have been joined together to form rolls. Originally there would have been 6 rolls A-F but, unfortunately, the collection does not include roll F. We have been able to partially fill this gap by acquiring an 1883 map that the Wyre Forest Conservation Officer has amongst his documents.

The map rolls have recently been professionally copied by the Worcestershire Archaeology Service at the Hive and the maps are now more readily available and provide a highly detailed high resolution source of historical and geographic information of Kidderminster as it was in 1883. They can be examined, edited and printed etc. with relative ease. Having said that, it has to admitted that viewing the map rolls directly is a much more pleasing and aesthetically satisfying experience.
The digitised version of the map have now been added to this website. Because of file size limitations, the quality will not be quite as high as the original map or the above mentioned photographic copies, but the detail shown is still excellent.
In order to get the most faithful copy of this map the individual sections comprising the rolls were photographed individually. We have retained the copies remain as individual sections but they have been collated as they were arranged in the original rolls.
The montage of the map sections below gives an indication as to where each section is situated in map rolls A to F. So for example, roll A has 3 map segments, roll C 5 and roll D 6.

If you click on the montage you can access a better quality montage image.
Roll A extends from Blakebrook to Claughton

Roll B extends from Franche to the Cemetery

Roll C extends from the Stourvale Works to Caldwall Farm

Roll D extends from Broadwaters Forge to Longmeadow Mills

Roll E extends from Broadwaters to the Railway station

Roll F section to covers the Land Oak area
Using this montage you may also view and download individual copies of the map sections (for non-commercial use) by clicking on the segment number e.g. A3 or D4.

Note that map roll F is missing from this collection but the Wyre Forest District Conservation Officer Peter Bassett has been able to supply us with a substitute for section 2.
