PLANS FOR A NEW SEWERAGE SCHEME

KIDDERMINSTER

1870

The plans were part of an application for sanction to borrow £23,400 to fund 'Works for Main Sewerage'

Reference is made to a report by Mr Arnold Taylor 23 May 1870 and the Eastern plan is signed by Josiah Forster Fairbank.

There are two plans related to the Eastern and Western sections of the town. We are grateful to Garry Hooper for his skill and care in photographing these delicate maps.

Mike Loftus observes that these sewerage plans were not ideal and/or they were not properly followed when the system was laid – or both. After the 1884 typhoid epidemic, in which over 100 people in the town died, an enquiry identified the failure of the 1870 system as the major cause  of the outbreak.

Both plans are shown below in their entirety.
